Critics call the M5 14-inch MacBook Pro a very good laptop in an unchanged body. The faster GPU, much faster SSD and long battery life earn praise, and it keeps the $1,599 starting price. Reviewers say owners of the M4 model have little reason to upgrade, and some wish for a redesign, Wi-Fi 7 and cheaper memory and storage upgrades.

  • Noticeably faster GPU and SSD than the M4 model
  • Excellent battery life
  • Bright mini-LED display, with a nano-texture option
  • Same $1,599 starting price as last year
  • Design is unchanged from the previous generations
  • Memory and storage upgrades are expensive
  • Still on Wi-Fi 6E and Thunderbolt 4
  • Single fan can get loud under heavy load
  • Power adapter not included in some regions

“It’s extremely well-built, has a beautiful display (especially with the nano-texture option) and a really long battery life.”

“The 2025 MacBook Pro 14-Inch looks identical to its predecessor, but the M5 chip delivers vastly amped-up AI and graphics muscle, vaulting Apple's "basic" power MacBook into a new class of mighty machine.”

“It’s a brilliant workstation laptop if you need a lot of power and battery life, and the fact that it’s wrapped in a compact, robust package that’s really great to use is just a bonus.”

“But if you’re using a much older laptop and looking for a powerful new machine that doesn’t cost a fortune, the entry-level MacBook Pro continues to reign supreme.”

“In all, the M5 MacBook Pro is an incremental update, but it does make some big performance leaps in graphics and SSD throughput that made me say, "Wow!"”

“But while the new 14-inch MacBook Pro appears to be more of the same on the surface, it also features an impressive graphics upgrade that makes it a decent choice for gaming.”

“The MacBook Pro M5 isn’t a major departure from what we’ve gotten before, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing considering it’s still a fantastic laptop.”

“You certainly won't hate yourself for buying this machine, but as long as you can buy a similarly-specced M4 Pro MacBook Pro for the same price, the lack of anything else new in the M5 MacBook Pro makes it a harder sell.”

“It’s a computer for people who feel they need more than a MacBook Air can give them, but don’t have a reasonable argument why they might need the high-end performance of a Pro or Max-level chip.”
