Critics' Take
Critics praise the Steam Frame for its light, comfortable build and for wireless PC streaming through the included 6GHz dongle, and several call it the best PC VR headset available. The price, one to two hours of battery life, monochrome passthrough and unfinished standalone software hold it back. Scores run from 5/10 at The Verge to 4/5 at Tom's Hardware and Club386, and many reviewers point to the much cheaper Quest 3.
What critics loved
- Light and comfortable at about 440 g
- Reliable wireless PC streaming with the bundled dongle
- Controllers double as a full gamepad
- Plays Steam games standalone and by streaming
Common gripes
- $1,059 starting price
- Battery life of roughly one to two hours
- Black-and-white passthrough
- Bugs and patchy standalone game compatibility
- Top strap and hand straps cost extra
Critic Scorecard
13 reviews“Lightweight design and a trick wireless strategy make the Steam Frame a top-notch VR gaming experience.”
“It's admittedly a tough sell as an upgrade to a Quest 3, or as someone's first step into VR when other options are much cheaper, but the Steam Frame is the best all-round VR headset I've used to date.”
“Regardless, I have a hard time imagining a VR headset that is better for PC gaming in 2026, especially if you have a powerful PC ready to go already.”
“The system largely succeeds in this gambit, all while delivering exemplary wireless streaming quality.”
“But as a PC-to-VR device, it's a delight; liberating in its stress-free, wire-free functionality, if you can deal with the fleeting battery life.”

“The Steam Frame offers the best PC VR experience, but that may say more about how gaming-focused headsets have stalled.”
“I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is new to VR or prioritizes ease-of-use over raw capabilities.”
“It's a rough beta of a product right now, but it keeps getting better by degrees as I use it every week.”
“Otherwise, it feels like Valve is a few years late and a few hundred dollars short here.”
“Every day I spend with the Steam Frame, I feel like a beta tester.”
“While the Steam Frame is ultimately a solid standalone VR experience, it's hard to stomach its exorbitant price, as well as the fact that it's arriving far too late to inject much life into the declining state of VR.”
“The Steam Frame doesn't feel like a VR headset that's ready for primetime, and it arrives at the worst moment, when tech prices are higher than ever and VR isn't in a good place.”
